#2. A tibbar:  In general I dislike equipment that only allows you to do one exercise (because who has room for all that?), however this is one of the few that is worth it. What does it do: ·      Great for big toes, ankles and knees.   A tibbar makes it easier to train the important, and easily neglected muscles on the front side of your foot, ankle, lower leg and knee. ·      The biggest muscle worked is called your anterior tibilalis, and “tib” is a lot easier to say

Who: anyone with big toe, ankle, shin or knee issues; athletes involved in any sport with running, stopping, etc.

Which one:·

This one is versatile (fits any sized weight plates) and inexpensive.·

This one is made in America (which is a big plus for me), but costs a lot more and only accepts Olympic sized weight plates.

#3. Weighted Vest: with a (weighted) vest everything becomes best.  Weight vests are to fitness what salt is to cooking, but also in reverse – weight vests (like salt) make everything more enjoyable, and weight vests (unlike salt) remove sodium from your body via increased perspiration.

What does it do:

·      It adds more gravity to everything you do… in other words it allows you to burn more calories, and stimulate your bones and muscles while leaving your hands free.

·      Women usually use them to add load to their lower body exercises, and men to their upper body exercises (because men don’t like to train their legs).

·      Everyone benefits from wearing it while walking.  If you’re a non-runner, wearing a weight vest can make walking a mile burn as many calories as running it would.

·      Something about wearing the load for a long enough period of time helps suppress appetite.

Who: anyone concerned about their bone density, and/or looking for a low to moderate impact way to boost calories burned.

 Which one:

·      This one is comfy, reasonably priced, but not adjustable.  About 10% of your or someone else’s bodyweight is a good place to start.

·      The comfy, adjustable, but expensive vest seems to be discontinued.

#4. Wedge.  Makes exercise feel better for knees and low back.  This is true for most lower body exercise, and especially squats and split squats (genuflection in Latin).

What does it do:

·      Puts the body in a better position to bend at the ankles, hips and knees.

·      For the lower back it allows the torso to be upright while squatting, and allows the hips to bend more.  Mobile hips that are stronger through longer ranges of motion are happier in their own right and do a much better job of supporting your lower back.

·      For knees: Wedges have been used in knee rehab for decades because all exercises are more effective at reducing pain and improving function with a wedge. (In rehab they would call it a “decline board.”)  There is debate about why it is helpful that range from proprioception to a change in joint angle that promotes synovial fluid production… I lean towards the latter, but what is important is that it works very well.

Who: anyone with knees who exercises.

Which one:

·      This one is lightweight and easy to store, but not so easy to travel with.

·      These are lightweight, easy to store and travel better.

#5. Joint Flex (JointSkinCollagen+).  Great for joints and skin.

What it does:

·      Anecdotally, when coach Greg gives clients a few of his personal stash for knee pain they usually tell him their knees feel better within a day or two.

·      Collagen is a poor protein source, but when a high quality source (like BioCell Collagen®) is combined with other ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid and Chondroitin Sulfate it can be great for your joints and skin.

Who: anyone with concern for their skin, and who wants happier joints.

Which one: this one from DotFit.  Also, if you don’t have a pill organizer, get one.  Nobody’s memory is as good as they think it is, and when you are busy everyone forgets things like which supplements to take.  Great stocking stuffers.
