Q: What about vibration plates/platforms? Are they good for building muscle and/or bone density?
A: No, but they are really expensive and fancy looking.

A 12 month study of women with osteoporosis showed that 20 min a day on a vibration platform “had no significant effect on any bone outcomes.” This trial had a control group, and all participants received vitamin D and calcium supplementation. The results for muscular strength and muscle mass are similar most of the time. Some trials have shown that vibration plates might do a little something for children and adolescents, but not for adults.
NASA tested using vibration plates in space travel starting about 25 years ago. Zero gravity quickly makes your muscles & bones weak, and the low resistance & high rep workouts they were using weren’t very effective. NASA doen’t use vibration plates anymore because they didn’t turn out to be very effective or useful. NASA has improved the results of their astronauts by figuring out how to get more resistance (like 300 pounds) without gravity.
